NSW Rural Fire Service

NSW is one of the most bush fire prone areas in the world and the threat to life, property and the environment from bush fire is always present.

The NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) is the lead agency in combating bush fires and helping the community to prepare for bush fire.

Engaging communities in planning and decision making about bush fires is a key risk mitigation goal and a core function of the NSW RFS. Visit Stand 5 for detailed information on how you can prepare yourself, your family and your property for bush fire.

Bushfire is a major challenge for the community. It has been a natural part of our landscape for thousands of years and remains an ever-present threat. All new development on land that is designated as bush fire prone is legally required to consider bush fire and meet the requirements of Planning for Bush Fire Protection 2006 and AS3959: Construction of buildings in bushfire-prone areas – 2009.

Information will be provided by the NSW Rural Fire service that promotes an understanding of bush fire behaviour, bush fire assessment reports and the legal framework that governs the planning process for proposed developments on bush fire prone land in NSW.

This information is relevant to current and future home owners, developers, planners, councils, fire authorities and other government organisations.
